Hanzala ibn As'ad al-Shibami

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

A Kufan supporter associated with the Shibam branch of the Yemeni tribe of Hamdan. The principal form is Hanzala ibn As'ad al-Shibami, while some manuscripts give his father's name as Sa'd. Some lists treat Sa'd ibn Hanzala as a separate martyr, so that reversed form is not retained as this profile's alias. The available sources do not preserve his parents, spouse, or children with certainty.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A Hamdani supporter who warned the enemy in Qur'anic language on Ashura, took leave of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, fought, and was martyred.

Hanzala ibn As'ad al-Shibami, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was a Kufan supporter from the Shibam branch of the Yemeni tribe of Hamdan. His name is included in recognized Karbala martyr lists, and the early battle narrative preserves his presence beside Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, on Ashura. His name appears in more than one form. Hanzala ibn As'ad al-Shibami is the principal reading, while some manuscripts give Hanzala ibn Sa'd. However, some critical lists treat Sa'd ibn Hanzala as a separate person, so the reversed form is not merged with Hanzala merely as a scribal transposition. The sources do not preserve his early life, household, date of joining, or full journey with certainty. Some later writings describe him as a messenger between Imam Husayn and Umar ibn Sa'd, but this duty is not established as firmly as the speech and martyrdom preserved in the early Karbala report. In the report transmitted through Abu Mikhnaf and preserved by al-Tabari, Hanzala stood before the opposing force and warned them in Qur'anic language. He recalled the fate of the people of Noah, Ad, Thamud, and later communities, using the warning of the believer from Pharaoh's family in verses 40:30-33, and concluded with the warning of verse 20:61 against killing Imam Husayn. His intervention was not merely a battle cry. It was a final moral appeal, linking oppression, divine judgment, and the Day of Return with the decision facing the Kufan army. He warned that the killing of Imam Husayn and his companions would leave the perpetrators without a protector before Allah. Imam Husayn responded with a prayer for mercy and stated that the people had already rejected the truth and killed righteous companions. Hanzala then expressed his readiness to join those who had preceded him, offered farewell and peace to the Imam and his household, and received the Imam's prayer before advancing. The early account states simply that Hanzala fought until he was killed. It does not securely identify his killer, age, casualty count, or a separate rajaz. Later maqtal literature expands some of these matters, but the profile gives priority to the well-preserved Qur'anic address, farewell, combat, and martyrdom. This profile uses the shared location of the martyrs of Karbala and does not claim an individually identified grave or separate shrine. Hanzala's memory demonstrates that Ashura included counsel, Qur'anic argument, and an appeal to conscience alongside armed defence.

🏛️ Historical importance

Hanzala's historical importance lies in the Qur'anic warning he delivered before the opposing army. His speech connected the destruction of earlier communities, divine judgment, and the Day of Return with the decision to attack Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. Although his wider biography is limited, the preserved address gives him a distinct identity in the Karbala narrative. His example shows that the proof offered on Ashura included moral reasoning and the language of the Qur'an, not only lineage and armed resistance. The shared Karbala location preserves his memory among the collective martyrs without creating a false separate grave. Recording the name variants also shows how a strongly preserved event can sustain historical identity despite differences in later lists.

Abu Mikhnaf's report as preserved by al-Tabari supports the Qur'anic warning, Imam Husayn's response, Hanzala's farewell, combat and martyrdom. Tasmiyat and Rijal al-Tusi support the Hanzala al-Shibami identity. The inspected Karbala section of al-Irshad does not contain this Hanzala report, so that citation was removed. Hanzala ibn Sa'd remains a manuscript variant, while Sa'd ibn Hanzala may be a separate martyr and is no longer treated as an alias. A messenger role, exact killer, age, rajaz and casualty count remain unsupported or unstable.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
