Abd al-Rahman ibn Abdullah al-Arhabi
🌿 Lineage and family background
A Kufan supporter associated with the Arhab branch of the Yemeni tribe of Hamdan. His name and lineage appear as Abd al-Rahman ibn Abdullah, al-Kadan, al-Kudar, ibn Ubayd and related forms, while al-Irshad's report of Muslim ibn Aqil's mission names Abd Allah and Abd al-Rahman as sons of Shaddad al-Arhabi. This conflict prevents a fully certain identification; his parents, spouse and children are likewise not securely preserved.
⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement
A martyr of Karbala traditionally associated with carrying the Kufan letters and accompanying Muslim ibn Aqil, May Allah Be Pleased With Him; the identification of the ibn Abdullah and sons-of-Shaddad forms is not certain.
Abd al-Rahman ibn Abdullah al-Arhabi, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was a Kufan supporter associated with Arhab, a Yemeni branch of Hamdan. His name is included in recognized lists of the martyrs of Karbala, and his basic identity as a supporter of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, is stable. The extended form of his name varies considerably. Sources and later lists use al-Kadan, al-Kudari, ibn Ubayd, and other spellings, while some early translations mention Abd Allah and Abd al-Rahman as sons of Shaddad al-Arhabi. The profile therefore retains the established name Abd al-Rahman ibn Abdullah al-Arhabi but treats the additional genealogy cautiously. Reports about the Kufan correspondence identify Abd al-Rahman and Qays ibn Mushir among the messengers who carried letters to Imam Husayn in Makkah. The reported number of letters differs between sources, with figures near fifty, fifty-three, one hundred and fifty, or one hundred and fifty-three, so no single number is presented as certain. When Imam Husayn sent Muslim ibn Aqil, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, to investigate support in Kufa, several reports place Abd al-Rahman among his companions together with Qays ibn Mushir and Imara al-Saluli. The wording of al-Irshad and related transmissions is not uniform, and the sons-of-Shaddad reading creates a real identity problem that must remain visible. The early narratives do not clearly preserve every stage of Abd al-Rahman's activity after the collapse of Muslim ibn Aqil's mission. Later works state that he escaped Kufa secretly and rejoined Imam Husayn, but the route, timing, and circumstances are not equally documented in the earliest material. His presence in the Karbala martyr lists is stronger than the details of his final combat. Some traditions count him among those killed in the first general attack, while other later accounts place him in individual fighting after the noon prayer. The available evidence does not establish one sequence beyond doubt. Later maqtal writings attribute rajaz verses, casualty numbers, and a named killer to him. These details are not preserved with the same strength as his martyr identity, letter-carrying tradition, and association with Muslim ibn Aqil. The profile therefore avoids presenting them as settled history. This profile inherits the shared location of the martyrs of Karbala and does not claim a separately identified grave or shrine. Abd al-Rahman's memory joins the hopeful beginning of the Kufan invitation, the dangerous mission of Muslim ibn Aqil, and final loyalty at Karbala, while the unresolved name problem remains openly recorded.
🏛️ Historical importance
Abd al-Rahman's historical importance lies in linking the Kufan correspondence, the mission of Muslim ibn Aqil, and martyrdom at Karbala. His profile represents the movement before the battlefield as well as loyalty during Ashura. The martyr identity and connection with the Kufan invitation are strong, while the exact extended name, wording of the mission report, route back from Kufa, and sequence of death remain disputed. Keeping these levels separate protects the profile from false certainty. The shared Karbala location preserves him among the collective martyrs without inventing a separate grave. His memory shows how a messenger connected with the beginning of the invitation could remain loyal when the political support behind that invitation collapsed.

Martyr lists support an Arhabi-Hamdani martyr named Abd al-Rahman. Later biographical traditions identify him as Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Allah and connect him with Kufan letters and Muslim ibn Aqil's mission. However, the inspected al-Irshad mission passage instead names Abd Allah and Abd al-Rahman, sons of Shaddad al-Arhabi. Because the patronymic and mission identity are not securely reconciled, source_status is corrected from core to variant and research_level remains Under Review. Return from Kufa, battle sequence, killer, rajaz and casualty figures remain cautious.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation
This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
