Wadih al-Rumi
🌿 Lineage and family background
An early name list identifies him as the servant or mawla of Janada ibn al-Harith al-Salmani. Later works also associate him with al-Harith al-Madhhaji or call him Turkish; his parents and full ancestry are unknown.
⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement
A mawla counted among Imam Husayn's supporters, whose name is preserved as Wadih al-Rumi in an early list and whose martyrdom narrative was expanded in later literature.
Wadih al-Rumi, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, is named in the early list attributed to al-Fadil ibn al-Zubayr al-Kufi immediately after Janada ibn al-Harith al-Salmani, where he is described as his servant or mawla. This brief entry is important early evidence for Wadih's presence and martyrdom at Karbala. The designation al-Rumi is a historical identifying nisba, but it does not by itself establish his exact birthplace, ethnicity, or language. Later works also call him Turkish and sometimes associate him with al-Harith al-Madhhaji, showing that the transmitted affiliations are not fully uniform. The basic facts of his biography are extremely limited. The available early list does not preserve his parents, age, marriage, children, occupation, or the time at which he joined Imam Husayn's company. These gaps should not be filled with invented detail. Later maqtal literature contains the scene of a wounded mawla calling for help and Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, coming close to him with compassion. Some books attach this account to Wadih al-Rumi, while others connect it with Aslam al-Turki. The report should therefore be presented respectfully while making the identification problem explicit. Wadih is counted among the supporters who fought and were killed with Imam Husayn on Ashura. The earliest sources do not preserve his killer, battle verses, number of opponents, or exact chronological position in the fighting with certainty. His remembrance shows that early name collectors attempted to preserve not only prominent tribal figures but also mawali and servants. A short name-list entry thus gives a place in collective history to a man whose individual biography has otherwise largely disappeared. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not establish a separate grave, independent map marker, or individual shrine for Wadih, May Allah Be Pleased With Him.
🏛️ Historical importance
Wadih's historical importance begins with the survival of his name in an early list. The brief record broadens the social picture of Karbala by showing that mawali and servants were also part of the collective sacrifice. The famous final scene associated with him expresses the compassion of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, and his closeness to his supporters, but the same scene is assigned to Aslam in other reports. Acknowledging this variation is part of historical integrity. His remembrance does not require an independent shrine or an unsupported detailed biography. His preserved name represents the less-known supporters whose sacrifice survived in memory even when their personal histories did not.

The early martyr list preserves Wadih al-Rumi as entry 69 immediately after Janada ibn al-Harith al-Salmani and identifies him as Janada's ghulam/mawla. Later works also transmit al-Turki and associate him with al-Harith al-Madhhaji. The compassionate wounded-mawla scene appears in later maqtal literature with overlapping Wadih/Aslam traditions, so the profile remains variant and does not treat the scene as uniquely certain. No separate grave is established by the shared-parent location.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation
This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
