A'idh ibn Mujamma

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

Son of Mujamma ibn Abdullah al-A'idhi, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, and attributed to A'idh Allah ibn Sa'd al-Ashira of Madhhij.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

An A'idhi-Madhhiji martyr of Karbala remembered in the tradition of Husayni support together with his father Mujamma, May Allah Be Pleased With Him.

A'idh ibn Mujamma, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was the son of Mujamma ibn Abdullah al-A'idhi, May Allah Be Pleased With Him. His tribal affiliation was with A'idh Allah ibn Sa'd al-Ashira, a branch of Madhhij. Karbala martyr lists and later biographical tradition preserve him with his father as a loyal supporter of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, and a martyr. Ibsar al-Ayn states that A'idh set out with his father toward Imam Husayn and met him on the road. The same synthesis places them in the episode in which al-Hurr ibn Yazid's detachment challenged the arriving supporters and Imam Husayn protected them. The surviving early Abu Mikhnaf account describes four arrivals collectively, while later authors explain the count in different ways by including A'idh and two mawlas; A'idh's detailed placement is therefore best read as a substantial later identification. The historical background of this journey is Mujamma's perceptive report to Imam Husayn at Udhayb al-Hijanat. He explained that Kufan notables had been united by official payments and self-interest, while the hearts of ordinary people inclined toward the Imam even though their swords would soon be drawn against him. A'idh's memory belongs to a family choice in which a father's political insight and a son's practical companionship moved in the same direction. Later maqtal and biographical traditions give two closely related placements for A'idh's martyrdom on Ashura. One counts him among the martyrs of the first assault; another places his death with his father in the phase in which Mujamma and his companions fought together. Both forms affirm A'idh's martyrdom, although his name does not occupy the same position in every version of the early battle narrative. The secure center of A'idh's historical identity therefore consists of three points: he was the son of Mujamma and an A'idhi-Madhhiji; he belongs to the received tradition of Husayni support; and he is counted among the martyrs of Karbala. Different arrangements of the journey and battle sequence do not erase that identity. They show why name lists and continuous event narratives must be assessed at distinct evidentiary levels. This profile is linked to the collective location of the Karbala martyrs. A'idh's memory is an important example of a household's conscious loyalty, a shared moral choice across generations, and an honest presentation of a historical figure whose core identity is clearer than every detail of his final journey and combat.

🏛️ Historical importance

A'idh's historical importance lies in the shared Husayni loyalty of father and son. His memory shows that support for Karbala could become a conscious moral decision made by two generations of one household. His name, relationship to Mujamma, and martyrdom are established in the roster and biographical tradition, while the exact arrangement of the journey and combat rests on evidence of different levels. Preserving that distinction protects both respect and historical method. His connection with the collective location of the Karbala martyrs keeps his memory joined to his father and the other martyrs.

The early Tasmiyat roster explicitly names A'idh immediately after his father Mujamma among the martyrs, so the main identity, father-son relationship, and Karbala martyrdom are core rather than merely variant. Ibsar al-Ayn places A'idh with his father on the journey and records two later placements for his martyrdom: the first assault or death with his father in the opening phase. The surviving Abu Mikhnaf continuous narrative names Mujamma, Amr ibn Khalid, Jabir ibn al-Harith, and Sa'd in the four-man combat, while later syntheses count A'idh differently. The profile therefore keeps source_status core and research_level Level B, distinguishing the secure identity from the disputed itinerary and battle sequence.
