Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Ja'far

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

Son of Abdullah ibn Ja'far al-Tayyar, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, and grandson of Ja'far al-Tayyar, May Allah Be Pleased With Him. An early martyr-list tradition identifies his mother as al-Khawsa bint Khasafa; some later sources write the name as Hafsa, while popular and majlis memory sometimes calls him a son of Lady Zaynab, Peace Be Upon Her, so the maternal disagreement must remain explicit.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A Hashimite member of the house of Ja'far al-Tayyar whom his father left, together with his brother Awn, to support Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him; he was martyred on Ashura.

Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Ja'far, Peace Be Upon Him, was among the martyrs of the house of Ja'far al-Tayyar whose name is preserved by al-Tabari, al-Irshad, Maqatil al-Talibiyyin, and several martyr lists. He was a son of Abdullah ibn Ja'far, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, a grandson of Ja'far al-Tayyar, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, and a Hashimite relative of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. The sources do not agree about his mother. An early martyr-list text identifies him as a son of al-Khawsa bint Khasafa, while some later sources write the name as Hafsa and popular majlis memory often describes both Awn and Muhammad as sons of Lady Zaynab, Peace Be Upon Her. Because Abdullah ibn Ja'far had several wives and similarly named descendants, the maternal disagreement is stated explicitly rather than presented as settled. According to the report preserved by al-Shaykh al-Mufid and al-Tabari, Abdullah ibn Ja'far sent his sons Awn and Muhammad after Imam Husayn. They delivered a letter requesting his return, but after the Imam remained firm, their father instructed them to stay with him, continue the journey, and fight in his defence. This report clearly explains Muhammad's entry into the Husayni movement. His participation was not merely a consequence of kinship; it was an authorized and conscious commitment to the Imam's cause. The early sources do not preserve with certainty a separate speech, office, or detailed service for him on the road from Makkah to Karbala. During the Hashimite phase of combat on Ashura, Muhammad entered the battlefield with Awn and other members of Ahl al-Bayt. The report attributed to Abu Mikhnaf states that Amir ibn Nahshal al-Taymi or al-Tamimi attacked and killed him. The tribal form of the nisba varies in transcription, but the early report identifies the killer by this name. Later maqtal works attribute to Muhammad rajaz verses, numbers of enemy fighters killed, and a detailed duel narrative. Such material is not preserved at the same level in the concise early reports of Abu Mikhnaf and al-Irshad and is therefore not presented here as certain battlefield biography. Some martyr lists also contain the name Ubayd Allah among the sons of Abdullah ibn Ja'far, and later authors discuss whether Muhammad and Ubayd Allah reflect distinct persons or variation in the lists. Muhammad ibn Abdullah nevertheless appears independently and repeatedly in early sources, giving his basic identity strong standing. A report about Abdullah ibn Ja'far after Karbala presents him as accepting the martyrdom of his two sons as support for Imam Husayn and declaring that, had he been present, he would not have left the Imam. This account places the sacrifice of Muhammad and Awn within the wider Husayni loyalty of their family. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location and does not assert a separate grave or independent shrine. Muhammad's memory preserves the participation of the house of Ja'far, conscious attachment to the Husayni journey, and a concise but comparatively well-attested martyrdom report.

🏛️ Historical importance

Muhammad's importance lies in the early report that places him in the support of Imam Husayn by his father's instruction. It presents the participation of the house of Ja'far as an organized and conscious family commitment. The core report of his martyrdom and killer is strong, while his mother, the possible list relationship with the name Ubayd Allah, rajaz verses, and casualty numbers differ. The profile explains these variations without weakening his established identity. The shared Karbala location preserves his memory among the collective martyrs. His concise biography shows that historical importance does not always depend on a long narrative; it may rest on clear lineage, conscious support, and a brief well-attested report of martyrdom.

The departure report supports Abdullah ibn Ja'far's letter through Muhammad and Awn and his instruction that they remain with Imam Husayn. The Abu Mikhnaf/Tabari martyr report identifies Amir ibn Nahshal al-Taymi as Muhammad's killer. The cited Tasmiyat entry gives his mother as al-Khawsa bint Khasafa; later sources preserve Hafsa or other spellings, and popular memory sometimes identifies Lady Zaynab. The mother-name fields use the early Tasmiyat form while the five-language lineage and narrative preserve the disagreement.

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
