Sa'd ibn al-Harith al-Ansari

Source status: Varies across source lists

🌿 Lineage and family background

The early name list identifies him as the brother of Abu al-Hutuf ibn al-Harith and counts him among the Ansar. Later works add the nisba al-Ajlani and sometimes a Khazraji connection, but his complete genealogy is not preserved uniformly in the earliest evidence.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

An Ansari who, with his brother Abu al-Hutuf, chose the support of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, in the final stage of Ashura and was killed at Karbala.

Sa'd ibn al-Harith al-Ansari is preserved with his brother Abu al-Hutuf ibn al-Harith in an early list of the martyrs. The list counts both men among the Ansar and connects their deaths with the support of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. Later biographical works attach the nisba al-Ajlani to his name and sometimes give a Khazraji connection. These additions are worth recording, but a complete genealogy is not preserved consistently in the earliest sources and therefore requires caution. According to the list of al-Fudayl ibn al-Zubayr, Sa'd and his brother were initially in the army of Umar ibn Sa'd and were associated with the Muhakkima. This concise notice does not permit a full reconstruction of their earlier lives or religious thought. The same account states that the voices of the women and children of Ahl al-Bayt affected the brothers. They abandoned their former position, came to Imam Husayn, and chose to defend him. The early text describes their joint attack and their deaths while fighting with swords. The statement that three opponents were struck is attributed to the brothers together and should not be converted into a separate combat total for Sa'd, May Allah Be Pleased With Him. The available sources do not preserve his age, other family relations, activity before Karbala, individual words, killer, or separate sequence of martyrdom. Detailed interpretations in later maqtal literature are therefore assigned a cautious evidentiary level. This profile is linked to the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not prove a separate grave, an independent shrine, or a distinct geographical marker for Sa'd ibn al-Harith.

🏛️ Historical importance

Sa'd ibn al-Harith is important for the clear early report that he and his brother made a final choice to support the side they judged to be right. His account highlights the power of changed intention and responsible decision at Karbala. His biography also demonstrates the need to distinguish a concise early entry from later expanded memory. The preserved fact may be stated respectfully, but an unpreserved age, killer, speech, or individual combat achievement should not be invented. The collective geographical relationship keeps him within the shared memory of the martyrs of Karbala while avoiding an unsupported attribution of a separate grave or shrine.

Tasmiyat names Sa'd ibn al-Harith and his brother Abu al-Hutuf among the Ansar, describes them as associated with the Muhakkima, and reports that after hearing the women and children of Ahl al-Bayt they changed sides, fought with swords and were killed after jointly striking three opponents. This is the only early independent attestation located; later biographical works substantially rely on the same report. The al-Ajlani and Khazraji additions are therefore recorded as later lineage proposals rather than established early genealogy. Age, killer, speeches and an individual combat total remain unverified. The shared-parent location does not establish a separate grave.

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
