Abis ibn Abi Shabib al-Shakiri
🌿 Lineage and family background
He belonged to Banu Shakir, a Yemeni branch of Hamdan established in Kufa. His father's name appears in reports in the forms Abi Shabib and Shabib.
⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement
An active Kufan supporter, helper of Muslim ibn Aqil, messenger to Imam Husayn, and a prominent fighter on the Day of Ashura.
Abis ibn Abi Shabib al-Shakiri, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, belonged to Banu Shakir, a Yemeni branch of Hamdan established in Kufa. His name is strongly represented in the early Karbala narrative and in recognized martyr lists. When Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, read the letter of Imam Husayn to the Kufans, Abis publicly declared his own commitment. The early report preserves the substance of his statement: he would answer the call, fight the enemies, and seek nothing except what is with Allah. Habib ibn Muzahir then affirmed the same position. After a large number of people had pledged allegiance to Muslim, the early narrative states that Muslim sent Abis with a letter urging Imam Husayn to come quickly. This gives Abis a documented role not only as a later fighter, but as a messenger in the political and religious communication between Kufa and the Imam. Abis eventually joined Imam Husayn and remained with the caravan at Karbala. In the later stage of the battle he came forward with Shawdhab, his associate. Their exchange shows that each understood the moment as a final opportunity for loyal action and divine reward. Abis encouraged Shawdhab to advance before him. After Shawdhab was killed, Abis addressed Imam Husayn directly and declared that no relative or distant person on earth was dearer to him than the Imam. He said that he would have offered anything more precious than his life and blood if he possessed it. He then advanced with his sword drawn. Rabi ibn Tamim, an observer from the opposing army, recognized him and warned the soldiers of his courage. When no one accepted single combat, Umar ibn Sa'd ordered that he be overwhelmed with stones, after which Abis cast aside his armour and attacked. The same early report attributes to the eyewitness the statement that Abis drove back more than two hundred men before he was surrounded and killed. Several men later disputed over his head, and Umar ibn Sa'd judged that no single weapon or fighter had killed him. These details are preserved as an attributed eyewitness report, not as an invitation to add later unverified numbers or dramatic scenes. Abis has one of the more substantial companion narratives in the Karbala record. His public declaration in Kufa, messenger service, exchange with Shawdhab, farewell to Imam Husayn, and final battle form a coherent account of chosen loyalty. This profile inherits the collective martyrs location and does not establish a separate grave or independent shrine for him.
🏛️ Historical importance
Abis is historically important because his commitment is documented at two distinct stages: public support for Muslim ibn Aqil in Kufa and final loyalty beside Imam Husayn at Karbala. The continuity between declaration and action gives his biography unusual coherence. His service as a messenger places him within the communications that shaped the movement before the battle. He did not merely arrive at the final hour; he helped transmit the political and religious invitation between Kufa and Imam Husayn. The account of his final battle is also notable because it includes recognition by an observer from the opposing army. That testimony anchors his reputation for courage in the early narrative, while later devotional expansions can still be evaluated separately. The exchange with Shawdhab and his farewell to Imam Husayn express the ethical meaning of companionship at Karbala. The shared martyrs location preserves this memory without creating an unverified independent tomb.

Al-Tabari, through Abu Mikhnaf material, supports Abis's public declaration in Kufa, Muslim ibn Aqil's dispatch of him with a letter to Imam Husayn, the exchange with Shawdhab, his farewell to Imam Husayn and the eyewitness report of his final battle. The statement that he drove back more than two hundred men and the dispute over his head are retained explicitly as attributed eyewitness details, not converted into independently measured totals. The early Tasmiyat roster separately confirms his inclusion among the Hamdani/Shakiri martyrs. Later unverified combat expansions are excluded. The shared-parent location does not establish an individual grave.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation
This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
