Awn ibn Abdullah ibn Ja'far

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

Son of Abdullah ibn Ja'far al-Tayyar, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, grandson of Ja'far al-Tayyar, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, and a close Hashimite relative of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. The well-known genealogical and Imami tradition identifies him as the son of Lady Zaynab bint Ali, Peace Be Upon Her, and calls him Awn al-Akbar; the existence of another son of Abdullah called Awn al-Asghar has produced some confusion in maternal genealogies.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A young Hashimite of the house of Ja'far al-Tayyar whose father instructed him to remain with and support Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him; he was martyred during the Ahl al-Bayt phase of the battle on Ashura.

Awn ibn Abdullah ibn Ja'far, Peace Be Upon Him, was one of the Hashimites from the house of Ja'far al-Tayyar whose name is preserved in early accounts of Karbala and recognized martyr lists. He was a son of Abdullah ibn Ja'far, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, a grandson of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, and a close relative of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. The well-known Imami and genealogical tradition identifies him as a son of Lady Zaynab bint Ali, Peace Be Upon Her, and calls him Awn al-Akbar. Abdullah ibn Ja'far's family, however, contained more than one person called Awn, which caused some confusion between Awn al-Akbar and Awn al-Asghar in reports about their mothers. This profile retains the dominant identification while noting the genealogical caution. The report preserved by al-Shaykh al-Mufid and al-Tabari states that after Imam Husayn departed from Makkah toward Iraq, Abdullah ibn Ja'far sent Awn and Muhammad after him. They delivered a letter containing an offer of security and a request that the Imam return. When Imam Husayn remained committed to his course, Abdullah instructed his two sons to stay with him, travel with him, and struggle in his defence. This report gives Awn's entry into the Karbala movement a clear moral and family setting. He was not an accidental presence on the battlefield; his father consciously left him in the company and service of Imam Husayn. The available sources do not preserve with certainty a separate speech, office, or detailed duty for him during the journey. On Ashura, after most of the companions had been martyred, members of Banu Hashim entered the battle. The concise report of Abu Mikhnaf, preserved by al-Tabari and al-Mufid, states that the enemy surrounded Awn and the others, after which Abdullah ibn Qutba or Qutbah al-Nabahani al-Ta'i attacked and killed him. The spelling of the killer's name varies slightly, while the underlying identification is substantially the same. Later maqtal and majlis literature attributes to Awn martial verses, a specific number of enemy casualties, a precise age, and elaborate battlefield exchanges. These details are not preserved with equal clarity in the early concise account and are therefore not presented here as certain history. Popular mourning narratives also describe Lady Zaynab approaching her son's body or receiving his martyrdom with exceptional restraint. Such accounts express the devotional and pulpit memory of the patience of Ahl al-Bayt, but the brief reports of Abu Mikhnaf, al-Tabari, and al-Irshad do not preserve the full scene in that form. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not assert a separate grave, independent shrine, or distinct map marker. Awn's memory highlights the connection between the house of Ja'far al-Tayyar, the family of Lady Zaynab, and conscious loyalty to Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him.

🏛️ Historical importance

Awn's historical importance rests especially on the clear early report that his father instructed him to remain with and support Imam Husayn. The episode preserves the sacrifice of the house of Ja'far as a conscious family decision of loyalty. The report of his martyrdom is concise but comparatively strong, while precise age, rajaz verses, casualty numbers, and elaborate scenes involving Lady Zaynab became more prominent in later devotional narration. The profile preserves the distinction while respecting both historical and commemorative memory. Through the shared Karbala location, his memory remains among the collective martyrs without creating a separate grave. His profile demonstrates that a limited but strong early report should be explained for its moral meaning rather than enlarged through unsupported detail.

The departure report supports Abdullah ibn Ja'far's letter through Awn and Muhammad and his later instruction that they remain with Imam Husayn. The Abu Mikhnaf/Tabari martyr report identifies Abdullah ibn Qutbah al-Nabahani al-Ta'i as Awn's killer. The Tasmiyat text transmits Jumanah as the mother but its critical note states that the Karbala martyr was Awn al-Akbar, son of Lady Zaynab, whereas Awn son of Jumanah was Awn al-Asghar. Because early transmitted forms conflict, the separate mother-name fields remain blank while the lineage and narrative preserve the dominant identification with explicit caution.

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
