Amr ibn Khalid al-Saydawi

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

A Kufan attributed to the Sayda branch of Banu Asad. His name appears as Amr and, in some transmissions, Umar.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A Saydawi supporter who left Kufa with Sa'd and other companions, joined Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, at Udhayb al-Hijanat, and was martyred with his companions on Ashura.

Amr ibn Khalid al-Saydawi, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was a Kufan affiliated with the Sayda branch of Banu Asad. His name appears as Amr or Umar in early transmission, while al-Saydawi and al-Asadi express the narrower and broader levels of the same tribal affiliation. Later biographical tradition remembers him as a respected Kufan devoted to the Ahl al-Bayt, Peace Be Upon Them. Sa'd, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was his mawla and companion. In this setting, mawla can denote a social bond of manumission, clientage, or alliance. Their companionship in travel, danger, and martyrdom raises the relationship beyond a social label and presents it as mutual loyalty and a shared moral choice. After the movement of Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, was suppressed and official surveillance tightened in Kufa, Amr left the city with a small party. It included Sa'd, Mujamma ibn Abdullah al-A'idhi, and a Salmani companion, May Allah Be Pleased With Them; later tradition also connects A'idh ibn Mujamma with the journey. Al-Tirimmah ibn Adi guided them by an indirect route, and they brought the horse of Nafi ibn Hilal, May Allah Be Pleased With Him. The party reached Imam Husayn's caravan near Udhayb al-Hijanat. Al-Hurr ibn Yazid's detachment proposed arresting or returning the newcomers, but Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, declared that they were his supporters and companions and that he would defend them as he defended himself. Al-Hurr then desisted, and the arrivals joined the Husayni caravan. At that meeting, Mujamma reported the latest political conditions in Kufa and conveyed the martyrdom of Qays ibn Mushir al-Saydawi, May Allah Be Pleased With Him. The group therefore brought not only physical support but current knowledge from a city under control. Amr's importance lies in the practical initiative of leaving surveillance behind, accepting a dangerous journey, and turning intention into actual support for the Imam. Early on Ashura, Amr attacked with Jabir ibn al-Harith al-Salmani, Mujamma, and Sa'd, May Allah Be Pleased With Them. The four advanced deeply into the opposing lines, where they were surrounded and cut off from the Husayni formation. The early report presents them as a coordinated band of companions whose collective action is more prominent than individual display. Al-Abbas ibn Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, advanced alone, broke the encirclement, and brought the four out. They returned wounded, but when the enemy closed on them again, they took up their swords together and were martyred at the same place or in one continuous phase. This concise but strong narrative links Amr's arrival, collective combat, al-Abbas's intervention, and final steadfastness in a clear historical sequence. This profile is linked to the collective location of the Karbala martyrs. Amr's memory is a powerful example of breaking out of political containment, bringing companions with him, entering the Imam's protection, and maintaining collective loyalty even after severe wounds.

🏛️ Historical importance

Amr's historical importance lies in breaking through political surveillance in Kufa and reaching Imam Husayn with an organized party. His journey is a clear example of turning intention into practical support. His companionship with Sa'd highlights the social bond of wala in Karbala through mutual dignity and moral equality. On Ashura, the joint attack of four companions and the intervention of al-Abbas place collective loyalty, rather than individual fame, at the center. His connection with the collective location of the Karbala martyrs preserves his memory in that same communal setting.

The Abu Mikhnaf material preserved by al-Tabari strongly supports the party's arrival at Udhayb al-Hijanat, Imam Husayn's protection of the newcomers, Mujamma's report on Kufa, and the four-man combat in which al-Abbas broke their encirclement before their joint martyrdom. The early narrative presents Amr as a committed supporter; the stronger title 'leader' was removed because it is not explicitly established by the cited account. Amr/Umar is a transmission variant, while al-Saydawi and al-Asadi are compatible narrower and broader tribal levels. The Tabari battle-page note was corrected from 445 to 446.

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
