Uthman ibn Ali, Peace Be Upon Him
🌿 Lineage and family background
A son of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, Peace Be Upon Him, a paternal brother of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, and a son of Lady Fatima bint Hizam al-Kilabiyya, known as Umm al-Banin, Peace Be Upon Her. Al-Abbas, Abdullah, and Jafar ibn Ali were his full brothers.
⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement
A Hashimite member of Ahl al-Bayt who remained with Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, rejected an offer of safe-conduct, entered the battle, and was martyred on Ashura.
Uthman ibn Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, was among the sons of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib who were martyred with the Ahl al-Bayt at Karbala. He was a paternal brother of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, a son of Lady Fatima bint Hizam al-Kilabiyya, known as Umm al-Banin, Peace Be Upon Her, and a full brother of al-Abbas, Abdullah, and Jafar ibn Ali. Early historical and genealogical sources include him among the sons of Imam Ali and Umm al-Banin. Maqatil al-Talibiyyin also preserves a report that Imam Ali named him Uthman after his religious brother Uthman ibn Mazun, May Allah Be Pleased With Him. A complete birth record and detailed account of his early life are not preserved, so his biography should not be expanded through unsupported episodes. Maqatil al-Talibiyyin reports that he was twenty-one at the time of his martyrdom. Some later works transmit other age calculations, but no agreed and independently established birth year is available. The age of twenty-one is therefore recorded as the report of that source rather than as an uncontested chronological conclusion. During the events of Karbala, Uthman remained with his full brothers in the camp of Imam Husayn. In the early days of Muharram, Shimr offered safe-conduct to the sons of Umm al-Banin, but they refused to preserve their own lives by abandoning Imam Husayn. The episode is a clear expression of their shared family loyalty and covenant. The Ashura reports present Abdullah, Jafar, and Uthman as a group of the maternal brothers of al-Abbas. Al-Irshad reports that al-Abbas asked his brothers to advance before him and that they were killed after severe fighting. The early narrative does not preserve every movement or a complete separate combat sequence for each brother. Maqatil al-Talibiyyin reports that Khawli ibn Yazid struck Uthman with an arrow, after which a man from Banu Aban ibn Darim attacked him, killed him, and severed his head. The spelling and tribal description of the assailants vary in some later manuscripts, so the central report is retained with appropriate source caution. Later maqtal and majlis literature preserves battle verses attributed to him, individual acts of courage, and additional battlefield scenes. These accounts remain important within devotional remembrance, but every verse, number, and combat detail cannot be assigned the same early historical status. The secure basis is his family identity, presence with Imam Husayn, rejection of safe-conduct, and martyrdom. Uthman ibn Ali is remembered among the young martyrs of the Ahl al-Bayt and within the shared sacrifice of the sons of Umm al-Banin. This profile uses the collective Karbala martyrs location; no separate verified grave, independent shrine, or map marker is created.
🏛️ Historical importance
The historical importance of Uthman ibn Ali lies within the family circle of the Ahl al-Bayt that remained with Imam Husayn until the end at Karbala. The participation and martyrdom of the sons of Umm al-Banin form a powerful example of shared loyalty and sacrifice. His rejection of safe-conduct is a clear moral feature of his remembrance. A route to personal survival was offered, but he did not accept separation from Imam Husayn and his brothers. The episode is best understood through covenant, family solidarity, and practical support. Details of his martyrdom survive at different source levels. Maqatil al-Talibiyyin records his reported age, the arrow, and the final attack, while al-Irshad describes the brothers' shared advance. Distinguishing securely preserved facts from later battle verses and expanded scenes is necessary for historical integrity and respectful remembrance.

Maqatil al-Talibiyyin supports Uthman's mother, the reported age of twenty-one, the naming report connected with Uthman ibn Mazun, the arrow of Khawli ibn Yazid, and the final attack by a man of Banu Aban ibn Darim. Al-Tabari's transmitted Karbala material supports the safe-conduct episode, while al-Irshad and the early family-martyrdom tradition preserve the shared advance of al-Abbas's maternal brothers. Later battle verses and expanded combat scenes are retained only as devotional tradition and are not presented as equally early evidence.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation
This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
