Sulayman ibn Razin

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

He was a trusted attendant and associate connected with the household of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. Historical reports preserve the name Sulayman ibn Razin and the kunya Abu Razin. Later biographical tradition names his mother as Kabsha and varies over whether Abu Razin was Sulayman's own kunya or his father's; the family detail is therefore retained cautiously. Reliable details of a spouse, children, and birth date are not preserved.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A trusted envoy of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, who carried a letter from Makkah to leading figures of Basra and was killed while fulfilling that diplomatic mission.

Sulayman ibn Razin, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was a trusted attendant and associate of the household of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. His principal historical identity is based not on combat at Karbala but on an important diplomatic mission to Basra. In 60 AH, while Imam Husayn was in Makkah, he sent a letter to leading tribal and political figures in Basra. The letter informed them of the situation and invited cooperation in support of justice. Imam Husayn entrusted this sensitive letter to Sulayman. Basra was under the strict surveillance of Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, so arrest, interrogation, and death were real dangers. Historical reports name recipients such as Malik ibn Musma, al-Ahnaf ibn Qays, al-Mundhir ibn al-Jarud, Masud ibn Amr, and Qays ibn al-Haytham. Sulayman faithfully delivered the message. Al-Mundhir ibn al-Jarud feared that the letter might be a governmental test. He handed Sulayman and the letter to Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad. Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad ordered Sulayman to be killed. His martyrdom occurred in Basra before Imam Husayn reached Iraq and before the events of Ashura. His biography shows that the Karbala movement was not limited to the battlefield. Those who carried letters and established communication between cities were essential participants. The early political accounts do not preserve his age, spouse, children, final words, or burial place. Later biographical tradition names his mother as Kabsha and varies over the Abu Razin designation, so this family attribution is retained cautiously. His firm historical identity is that of a trusted attendant of Imam Husayn, an envoy to Basra, and a man killed while carrying out his responsibility. This profile inherits the collective Karbala directory location, but his martyrdom occurred in Basra. It does not assert a separate grave, independent shrine, or map marker for him at Karbala.

🏛️ Historical importance

Sulayman's historical importance lies in the Basran communication of Imam Husayn's movement. His mission shows that the Imam presented his position in an organized manner to different cities and tribal leaders. His death demonstrates the cost of diplomatic trust. He was not killed in battlefield combat but became a victim of governmental repression while protecting and delivering a letter. His profile clarifies the wider geography of the Karbala movement. The shared directory location connects him with the overall movement, while his actual martyrdom occurred in Basra and no separate grave at Karbala is asserted.

Al-Tabari's transmitted account preserves Imam Husayn's Basra letter, its recipients, al-Mundhir ibn al-Jarud's surrender of the envoy and Ibn Ziyad's execution order. Later reports differ between beheading and hanging. The name is transmitted as Sulayman ibn Razin and also with the kunya Abu Razin; later biographical tradition identifies his mother as Kabsha and differs over whether Abu Razin was his own kunya or his father's. The core mission and pre-Ashura death in Basra are firm; the family details remain later-source material. No separate Karbala grave is asserted.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
