Anas ibn al-Harith al-Kahili

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

A Companion associated with the Kahil branch of Banu Asad. His name appears in forms including Anas ibn al-Harith, Anas ibn al-Harith ibn Nabih, and Anas ibn Kahil. The available sources do not preserve his parents, spouse, or children with certainty.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

An elderly Companion associated with the Prophet Muhammad, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, who transformed the transmitted prophetic report concerning support for Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, into practical loyalty and was martyred at Karbala.

Anas ibn al-Harith, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, is counted among the martyrs of Karbala whose identity is preserved as both a Companion and a supporter of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. Al-Bukhari's al-Tarikh al-Kabir gives the concise notice that he heard from the Prophet Muhammad, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, and was killed with Husayn ibn Ali, Peace Be Upon Him. His name and lineage appear in different forms. Works on the Companions and transmitters use Anas ibn al-Harith, Anas ibn al-Harith ibn Nabih, and Anas ibn Kahil. These variants do not erase the underlying identity, but they require caution concerning the complete pedigree and some family links. A famous report transmitted from him states that the Prophet foretold the killing of Imam Husayn in the land of Karbala and instructed anyone who witnessed it to support him. The report became highly important in later Companion literature and maqtal memory. Its chain, however, includes transmitters such as Sa'id ibn Abd al-Malik who were discussed critically by hadith scholars. The report's historical and devotional prominence is therefore acknowledged without presenting it as an undisputed highest-grade hadith. Early Karbala narratives do not preserve the complete stage at which he joined the caravan. Later tradition depicts him as an elderly Companion living in or around Kufa who met Imam Husayn after his arrival. The available sources do not preserve the route, meeting place, and exact time with certainty. Majlis and later biographical works also give very high ages and claim participation in Badr, Uhud, Hunayn, or other campaigns. His basic association with the Companions is important, but equally early evidence for every named battle and a precise age is unavailable. Such claims are therefore not made certain. His martyrdom on Ashura is preserved in the martyr lists, while the detailed Abu Mikhnaf battlefield narrative does not provide a long account of his final combat. Later maqtal works give rajaz verses, casualty numbers, and descriptions of courage despite advanced age. These traditions honor his loyalty, but their figures and wording are treated cautiously. The central meaning of Anas's personality is that he did not leave the transmitted prophetic report as words alone; he offered his life in practical support of Imam Husayn. He thus became an ethical link between companionship with the Prophet and martyrdom in the Husayni cause. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not assert a separate grave, independent shrine, or distinct map marker for Anas. His memory symbolizes companionship, responsibility for transmitted knowledge, loyalty in old age, and a final covenant with Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him.

🏛️ Historical importance

Anas's historical importance lies in the unusual combination of Companionship, a transmitted prophetic foretelling, and practical support at Karbala. Al-Bukhari's concise notice preserves the foundational identity that he heard from the Prophet and was killed with Imam Husayn. Caution is required regarding the chain of the famous report, his age, earlier campaigns, and detailed combat. His name nevertheless shows that the Husayni movement was supported by individuals understood to be directly connected with the Prophetic generation and early Islamic memory. Under the shared Karbala location, his memory remains among the collective martyrs without creating a separate grave. His profile demonstrates how a brief rijal entry, a famous but debated transmission, and a certain martyrdom can be assigned different evidentiary levels while still conveying the stature of the personality.

Al-Bukhari's al-Tarikh al-Kabir, entry 1583, preserves the foundational notice that Anas heard the Prophet and was killed with Husayn ibn Ali, while explicitly noting criticism of Sa'id ibn Abd al-Malik in the cited chain. Companion dictionaries and Karbala martyr lists preserve the identity and the famous foretelling report. Exact age, participation in named earlier battles, joining route, rajaz and casualty totals remain later or insufficiently uniform and are therefore presented cautiously. The shared-parent location does not assert a separate grave.

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
