Abd al-Rahman ibn Aqil

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

Son of Aqil ibn Abi Talib, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, grandson of Abu Talib, nephew of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, and paternal cousin of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. An early martyr list describes his mother only as an unnamed umm walad. Later genealogical works disagree over his marriage: some name Khadija, daughter of Imam Ali, while others name Umm Hani, also called Fakhita, daughter of Imam Ali. The name Aliyya is not securely established as his mother.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A Hashimite fighter of Banu Aqil and paternal cousin of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, who fought with Ahl al-Bayt on Ashura and was killed in a combined attack.

Abd al-Rahman ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, was a son of Aqil ibn Abi Talib, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, and a member of the Aqili branch of Banu Hashim. He was therefore a nephew of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, a brother of Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, and a paternal cousin of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. An early martyr list describes his mother only as an unnamed umm walad. Later genealogical works disagree over his marriage: some name Khadija, daughter of Imam Ali, while others name Umm Hani, also called Fakhita, daughter of Imam Ali. Some modern summaries give the name Aliyya for his mother, but that identification is not established by strong early evidence; neither the spouse variant nor that maternal name is treated as certain biography. Abd al-Rahman belonged to the family of Banu Aqil whose role in the Husayni movement began before Ashura. His brother Muslim ibn Aqil had been martyred in Kufa as the Imam's representative, while several sons and grandsons of Aqil stood with Imam Husayn at Karbala. The available early sources do not preserve with certainty his complete travel route, the date at which he joined the Imam, or a distinct duty in the caravan. His clear historical presence appears in the Hashimite phase of combat on Ashura and in the martyr lists. A report preserved from Abu Mikhnaf names Uthman ibn Khalid ibn Asir al-Juhani together with a second Hamdani attacker whose personal name and nisbah appear in variant forms as Bishr or Bashir. They are described as sharing in Abd al-Rahman's killing and plundering his belongings, while the concise al-Irshad tradition sometimes foregrounds Uthman alone. Later maqtal literature attributes to Abd al-Rahman rajaz verses, a particular age, and a specific number of enemy horsemen killed. These details are not preserved with equal clarity in the early concise report of Abu Mikhnaf and are therefore not presented here as certain biography. His name appears consistently in al-Irshad, al-Tabari, Maqatil al-Talibiyyin, al-Fudayl ibn al-Zubayr's martyr list, devotional material, and numerous rosters of Hashimite martyrs. This strong name-list presence supports a core source status, while variations concerning his mother, spouse, age, and combat details remain recorded. His martyrdom forms part of the collective sacrifice of Banu Aqil. Even after Muslim ibn Aqil had been killed in Kufa, other members of the family continued to stand with Imam Husayn. This continuity is a historical example of loyalty maintained despite previous family loss. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not assert a separate grave or independent shrine for Abd al-Rahman. His memory preserves the family covenant of the house of Abu Talib, the collective support of Banu Aqil, and a concise but strong historical report of martyrdom on Ashura.

🏛️ Historical importance

Abd al-Rahman's historical importance lies in the collective support of Banu Aqil that continued even after Muslim ibn Aqil's martyrdom in Kufa. His presence demonstrates the family's sustained commitment to the Husayni movement. The report preserved from Abu Mikhnaf names two attackers and mentions the plundering after the killing, while the concise al-Irshad tradition simplifies the attribution. Age, rajaz, and casualty counts belong to later detail, so the profile distinguishes early and later narration. Under the shared Karbala location, his memory remains with the other Hashimite martyrs without creating a separate grave. His profile shows that earlier family loss did not cause the house of Aqil to withdraw from supporting Imam Husayn.

Early and widely used Karbala traditions consistently preserve Abd al-Rahman ibn Aqil as a Banu Aqil martyr. Al-Fudayl ibn al-Zubayr and Maqatil al-Talibiyyin describe his mother as an unnamed umm walad, while al-Tabari preserves the joint attack by Uthman ibn Khalid and a Hamdani participant. Genealogical works differ over whether his wife was Khadija bint Ali or Umm Hani/Fakhita bint Ali, and the name Aliyya is not securely established for his mother. Later age, rajaz, and casualty-count details remain non-uniform.
