Abd al-Rahman ibn Mas'ud, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, appears immediately after his father, Mas'ud ibn al-Hajjaj, in an early list of the martyrs. The text of al-Fudayl ibn al-Zubayr explicitly calls him the son of Mas'ud, making the father-son identification the strongest element of his historical profile. Later works add the affiliations Tamimi or Taymi, although the precise sub-tribal form is not uniform. Reliable early sources do not preserve details about his mother, age, marriage, children, or occupation before Karbala. Some later accounts state that he left Kufa with his father in the army of Umar ibn Sa'd and that both joined Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, when an opportunity arose. The early list preserves only his martyrdom and paternal relationship, so the journey and transfer of allegiance must remain identified as later maqtal tradition. It is also not securely known whether Abd al-Rahman made the decision at the same moment as his father or whether a separate conversation took place. Later memory presents them as an example of shared loyalty, but the available early text does not preserve his personal words. No early report reliably names his killer or provides an individual combat narrative, final statement, or exact phase of martyrdom. Some later authors place both father and son among those killed in an initial assault, a sequence that should remain cautiously classified as later testimony. Abd al-Rahman, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, is especially remembered through the shared sacrifice of father and son. His profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location and does not establish a separate grave, shrine, or independent map marker.

Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
