Yazid ibn Ziyad al-Kindi Abu al-Sha'tha, May Allah Be Pleased With Him
🌿 Lineage and family background
He belonged to Banu Bahdala, a branch of Kinda. His name is preserved as Yazid ibn Ziyad ibn Muhasir, while some transmissions read Muhajir or a similar form. Abu al-Sha'tha was his recognized kunya. His mother, spouse, children, and age are not preserved.
⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement
A Kindi archer who ultimately chose the Husayni camp, shot one hundred arrows before Imam Husayn, received the Imam's prayer, and was martyred on Ashura.
Yazid ibn Ziyad Abu al-Sha'tha al-Kindi, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, belonged to Banu Bahdala of Kinda. His kunya was Abu al-Sha'tha, and he possessed exceptional skill in archery. His name is preserved in early martyr lists and in the Ashura narrative transmitted from Abu Mikhnaf. The name of his father appears in forms such as Muhasir, Muhajir, or similar readings. This scribal variation does not remove the identity of the recognized Kindi archer. The profile uses the widely transmitted form Yazid ibn Ziyad ibn Muhasir. The sequence of his joining the Husayni caravan is preserved in two recognized historical forms. One report shows him with Imam Husayn during the period of al-Hurr's detachment, while the report transmitted from Abu Mikhnaf states that he had come out with Umar ibn Sa'd and separated from that army when the fair conditions offered by Imam Husayn were rejected. The clear center of both reports is his final conscious choice. He rejected the larger army, governmental pressure, and the appearance of worldly victory and chose the justice and moral position of Imam Husayn. This decision made him a leading example of insight, return, and practical loyalty at Karbala. On Ashura, he knelt before Imam Husayn and shot one hundred arrows at the opposing army. The Abu Mikhnaf report states that only five arrows fell to the ground, while Imam Husayn prayed that Allah direct his shooting and make Paradise his reward. With each shot, he proclaimed his Bahdali affiliation and martial resolve. Imam Husayn prayed that Allah direct his shooting and make Paradise his reward. This prayer of the Imam became the most prominent spiritual element of his remembrance. After finishing the arrows, he stated that only five had fallen to the ground and that he was certain he had killed five men. The value of this report lies in its concrete description of his concentration and effective defence, not in inflating an uncertain casualty total. When his arrows were exhausted, he entered the battlefield with his sword. The rajaz attributed to him declares his name and his father's name, his support for Imam Husayn, and his abandonment of Ibn Sa'd. His words unite moral choice with battlefield action. Abu al-Sha'tha continued fighting until he was martyred. Some chronological accounts place him among the early martyrs, while individual battlefield sequences are not entirely uniform. His established identity rests on support for the Imam, skilled archery, the Imam's prayer, and final sacrifice. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not establish a separate grave, independent shrine, or distinct map marker for Abu al-Sha'tha. His memory is a clear example of changing one's course when truth becomes evident, leaving a former alignment, and placing every ability in the service of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him.
🏛️ Historical importance
Abu al-Sha'tha's historical importance lies in his conscious choice. He understood the situation, accepted the justice of Imam Husayn's position, and left his former alignment to join the Husayni camp. The account of one hundred arrows, the Imam's prayer, and his later sword combat preserves his complete participation in the battle. He was not merely a man who changed an opinion, but a fighter who fulfilled his new commitment through practical sacrifice. Different readings of his name, his father's name, and the sequence of joining form part of the source tradition, while his loyalty, archery, and martyrdom are clearly preserved. The shared Karbala location keeps his memory among the collective martyrs without creating a separate grave.

Abu Mikhnaf's report, preserved in al-Tabari and later historical compilations, supports the stable identity of Yazid ibn Ziyad ibn Muhasir, Abu al-Sha'tha al-Kindi of Banu Bahdala. It preserves his archery, one hundred arrows, Imam Husayn's prayer, rajaz and martyrdom. The wording states that only five arrows fell to the ground; Abu al-Sha'tha then said that he was certain he had killed five men. Reports differ over whether he was already with Imam Husayn before al-Hurr's interception or initially came with Umar ibn Sa'd and later changed sides. The final allegiance and battlefield actions are stable.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation
This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
